   Six fundamental steps
   in raising your Puppy

Bringing your puppy home

Prior to bringing your puppy home puppy proof your house! Put away breakable items. Your puppy is very active and anything glass can be dangerous. Be sure that all electrical cords are out of reach.  Before Bringing your puppy home check and dispose of any plants that could prevent harm as some can be poisonous. Small objects can be chocked on so get down on your knees and look hard as even in the most obscure places, your puppy will find them. Ensure vitamins, medications and even chocolate (known to be poison to dogs) is stored tightly away. Puppies are attracted to scent so put your garbage and it's hazards out of reach.

Your puppy will be unaware of the dangers his new home presents so it is up to you to ensure it is safe.

Before bringing your puppy home check the yard for hazards as well. Is the fence secure? Are there any dangerous chemicals around? Like the plants indoors certain outdoor vegetation is poison to animals as well so do your research.

Now that your home is secure it is time to go shopping...

On this list of puppy essentials you should have: A puppy crate: like a play pen for babies, it is to protect your puppy from harm as you cannot always have a watchful eye. This den will also become his comfort zone, a place of security. Ensure the crate is large enough as this little puppy is going to grow.

A collar, leash and ID tags, grooming tools, toys, a doggy dish for food and water and treats for training are all essential supplies.

Choosing your puppies food is very important to providing your pup with the essential nutrition requirements it needs to stay healthy. Puppies need good nutrition so choose the right product. Unless you are a registered dog nutrition expert start your puppy with good quality commercially prepared puppy food specifically formulated for puppies. You would not feed an infant junk food so be as watchful in shopping for your puppies’ food. Read the labels, feed him wholesome, nutritional and balanced meals. How often and how much food may depend on your puppies weight, breed and activity level. When and where are dependent of his and your schedule and environment. Check the label, quality brands will list food requirements and schedules for puppies.

Water is as vital as food for your puppy and should be available at all times. Restrictions should only apply in the evenings during your house training weeks.
