   Six fundamental steps
   in raising your Puppy

Your Puppies Health

It’s time to choose a Vet. As your puppies health is top priority, Routine health visits and vaccines are the best preventative care you can give your puppy. A visit to the Vet is recommended as soon as you bring your puppy home.

In choosing a Vet it is advisable to ask for recommendations. Certainly many of your friends have dogs and can offer advise or the breeder may suggest a vet specifically trained in treating your breed of dog. A local kennel club may also have listings referred to them by members.  Research has proven that most dog owners gravitate towards a vet center close to where they live. I suggest you investigate your options.

Once you  have decided on a vet, schedule a check up.

Puppy Vaccinations usually start at six weeks continuing with three or four recommended series, three to four weeks apart. If your puppy received his first vaccine while with the breeder, within a few weeks of being at home with you is time for his follow up.

Proper vaccination is you best defense in protecting your puppy against infection and disease.

Your Puppies Dental Care is crucial as it is the no.1 health problem in dogs. By the time you puppy is three-five weeks old he will have developed 28 milk teeth.  At 12-14 weeks these will be replaced with his adult teeth, 42 in all. Your responsibility is to keep your dogs teeth healthy. Regular brushing using a toothbrush and paste developed for dogs will remove bacterial plaque and prevent gum disease. Although your puppies baby teeth will be replaced it is recommended getting him used to brushing at an early age.

Puppy toothpaste is often flavored with chicken or beef so it should make the experience a little easier. Use circular motion and praise him throughout the procedure. It is recommended that you brush his teeth at least three times a week followed by professional cleaning at least once every two years.
